The Organisation

Ways to Wellness was established to deliver social prescribing to a defined target group at scale across 18 general practices in the West End of Newcastle upon Tyne. A social prescription occurs when health professionals refer patients to support in the community, to improve their health and wellbeing. The hypothesis that lies behind this is that health and wellbeing outcomes, particularly for people with long term conditions living in disadvantaged circumstances, are often socially rather than medically determined and that addressing social circumstances as well as medical problems can improve wellbeing and reduce demand on health services. To test this hypothesis Ways to Wellness put together the funding to manage and deliver the first Social Impact Bond in health in the NHS. It was launched in April 2015 and because of its success in delivering social prescribing at scale to people aged 40-74 with specific long-term conditions it has attracted international and national, as well as local interest. Our investors have now been almost completely repaid and we have also generated a significant surplus which we now wish to use to build on this success by expanding and spreading our existing service and by developing new services for children with neuro-disability and for adults with persistent physical symptoms and chronic pain.

Ways to Wellness require a Chief Executive with responsibility for ensuring the effective delivery of all day to day activities as well as the overall business goals and business strategy.

The Role

The CEO will be crucial in sustaining existing and building effective partnership relationships with a variety of stakeholders across both the public, private and the voluntary and community sector. Day to day the CEO will have oversight of the delivery plan and management of key risks, monitoring contract arrangements and ensuring performance metrics are met, ensuring funding obligations are met and sharing best practice on a regional and national stage.

The Person

It is essential the CEO has the entrepreneurial flair associated with leading a development charity, promoting new ideas, new services, and influencing practice. In addition, the CEO must have proven experience in stakeholder management and development and delivery of strategy.

The CEO must identify and be passionate about the Values of Ways to Wellness as well as having a previous connection to the voluntary sector and have been involved in delivering NHS contracts previously.

This is a great role to be able to shape and influence the future direction of Ways to Wellness and be part of an innovative organisation at the forefront of a national health initiative.
